Most hubs keep everything powered whether you are using it or not — the drive spinning quietly at midnight, the indicator glowing across a dark room. This one gives every port its own switch, so the things you are not using are genuinely off rather than merely ignored.
We chose it because it solves a small problem properly. The sockets are spaced far enough apart that a wide memory stick does not block its neighbours, and the run of cable is long enough to bring a desktop's back-panel ports round to where your hands are.

Before you choose
This is USB 2.0. That makes it the right hub for a mouse, keyboard, headset, dongle or memory stick, and the wrong one for moving large files off a fast external drive. A single bus-powered drive is usually fine; several power-hungry devices at once may ask for more than the computer can supply. Choose four ports for a laptop, seven for a desk that has become the centre of the house.
